The Toshiba Libretto was the first extra small notebook computer. It was released in 1996 to disappointing sales, as there was no real market for them. Over the past 16 years, that market has grown considerably, coinciding with improvements in computer technology. Smaller components have allowed more powerful, and thus more useful machines to come about. Paired with cellular internet providers, and emergence of free Wifi connectivity in the last few years has caused this former niche market to bloom into one of the most useful tools in modern life.
